Computer Repair 30 1st hour, 20 thereafter If your PC breaks, don’t panic. There are many symptoms. Perhaps it just won’t turn on? An error message comes up? Windows won’t even start? Your new printer just refuses to be recognised by the PC no matter which USB port you try? Let me do the worrying for you. Most problems can be repaired in an hour. My callout charge includes the first hour of labour and costs just J30 (that includes VAT). I will be able to tell you immediately if the job will take longer than an hour and will always be honest about my labour charges. After the initial hour labour is charged at J20 p/h. I will not stray into the second hour without informing you first. In some cases it may be necessary for me to take the PC away in which case you will not be charged a transportation fee. You will be liable for parts, however nine times our of ten I find most problems are usually software related rather than hardware. If you wish to source the parts yourself and have me fit them I am more than happy to do this. I do not place a mark up on parts and will usually buy at trade or in bulk. It’s unlikely you’ll be able to source them cheaper. Any problem with your PC, please give me a call.

Data Recovery 50 Data recovery is an area where most places have you over a barrel. It’s very rare that anyone wants to recover an operating system or program files from a damaged computer. These things are easily reinstalled. It’s more often personal or essential files. Photos, documents, music, video files. Items which are irreplaceable. Certain High Street stores offer data recovery “from” J79.99 – however you will often pay between J150 – J200. This is dressed up with an excessive labour charge. My charge for data recovery is just J50. While it’s true it can take sometimes up to and over 24 hours to recover a large hard drive, it doesn’t require any physical work on my part. It’s mainly software lead. I will not charge you labour for this time. In many cases data recovery can be performed on-site, especially for camera cards, USB memory sticks and smaller hard drives or accidental erasures (yes, even if you removed it from the recycle bin I can still get it back). In this instance the charge is just for the usual 1hr callout so is J30. The J50 Data Recovery will involve me taking the hard drive away and processing it within 2 working days. I will return the hard drive to you in person with your recovered files on DVD-R media (or a memory stick if you supply one). Do not be taken advantage of by excessively high data recovery costs. However please note that if your files take up more than 3 DVD-R discs (approx 12gb) you will be charged at 50p per additional disc.

Laptop Screen Replacement 35 + price of new screen Laptops are quite robust in general, but knock it in the wrong place and you could be faced with a cracked or damaged laptop screen, it’s an all too common occurance (I should know, it’s happened to me!). Cracking the screen immediately voids the warranty, so you can forget about sending it back to the manufacturer for repair, and claiming on home insurance just pushes your premiums up. The solution? Puchase a brand new screen and have it fitted by a professional, screens are cheaper than you think, you can pick up a brand new one for between J60 and J90, with next day delivery you can have your laptop back in working order in a couple of days. I charge J35 to replace a laptop screen, as it is quite a complex job depending on the make and model of laptop, I will purchase the screen for you, fit it and dispose of the old screen. I will include an invoice for the actual cost of the screen, so all you pay is that cost and the J35 fee to me. Operating System Upgrades 30 1st hour, J20 thereafter If you require an operating system upgrade, a reinstall of an existing operating system or even the means to run two operating systems side by side then don’t fear, the task is not as complex as you would think. Modern operating systems such as Windows 7 and Windows Vista have upgrade systems which keep all your data intact when upgrading. I can be on hand to watch over the upgrade procedure, and I also encourage you to contact me prior to purchasing a new operating system so I can get the best price for you, and also advise of any hardware upgrades you may need to run the operating system smoothly. As an engineer I recommend Windows 7 for anyone looking to upgrade their operating system, there are many different flavours of Windows 7 however so choose carefully, you may be purchasing one that either doesn’t have the features your require, or has features you don’t require (and don’t want to pay for!). Software Installations 30

Tuition 20 per hour Manuals and guides can be extremely frustrating and expensive. For example the best Adobe Photoshop books on the market are between J40 and J75 and tend to assume familiarity with the software first. I can offer tuition and introductory courses on a wide range of software: Adobe Audition, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Indesign, Microsoft Powerpoint, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Dreamweaver and many others. Just email for details. I also specialise in introductory courses for novices covering basics such as Windows, email, internet and word processing. These are tailored to suit the needs of the individual. Perhaps you’re retired and would like to buy a first computer in order to email your grandchildren? Or maybe you’ve got a PC but just don’t know what to do with it? I regularly provide tuition for people from 15 – 70 years of age and will do all I can to help. Tuition is J20 p/h and will almost always require more than one session. It will always be at a time you choose and sessions can last for up to 2 hours (Any longer and what you are taught tends to be lost!) Please ensure you own the software you wish to use! I can’t provide you with a copy of Photoshop in order to show you how to use it. You can however download 30 day trial versions of most Adobe Software from their website. Upgrades 30 Is your PC running slowly? Are you running out of space? Would you like to play a new game but your specifications don’t match? I can advise and quote on upgrades for all needs. Email me with your basic requirements and I can give you a rough idea of costs. Labour is charged at J20 p/h and most jobs only take an hour. For larger jobs I can collect and drop off your PC (I won’t charge you a fee for this, and will advise of of final price before I take the unit away) I will give you the option of sourcing your own components or alternatively I can order them for you (I do not charge a mark up on any hardware purchased). Of course just because your PC is running slowly, doesn’t necessarily mean it needs an upgrade! I will advise you if there is another reason for the PC running slower than it should, in many cases a cleanup of the system can greatly increase speed and responsiveness, any work carried out to software will be at standard labour rates of J30 p/h.

Virus Removal 35 Viruses, and also their ugly cousin Spyware, are getting more and more of a problem as the people that create them make them more sophisticated in order to infect your computer without you even having to open a file or click a link. Viruses can now infect your computer just from you viewing an advert on a seemingly harmless website, because of this it is normally a case of not if but when you will get infected. Standard virus removal programs such as Norton Internet Security and McAffee do a job up to a certain extent, but I don’t agree with their extortionate monthly / annual fees and the initial cost of purchasing the software. I don’t believe you should have to pay extra for virus removal software when free alternatives are availible on the internet which arguably do the job better than the packages you can pick up in high street retailers. For the record, I use the following software in order to keep my computer clean of viruses and remove ones that have got through the cracks and become a threat: ◦Windows Security Essentials ◦Malware Bytes Spyware Removal ◦Spybot Search & Destroy You are welcome to download these programs and either use them as a preventitive measure or to remove existing viruses, if the problem is too complex, or you want someone to walk you through the process then I will come out to your home for a standard fee of J30, remove all traces of viruses and spyware from your computer, install the software listed above and give you a quick walkthrough of how to use them if you get infected in the future.
